Day of Surgery

Day-of-Surgery Instructions for Your Comfort and Safety

Advanced Surgical Institute requires all of its patients to follow specific instructions for their day of surgery. It’s very important that you follow these instructions carefully for your comfort and safety. Not following the instructions might lead to your surgery being cancelled.

A Week Before the Day of Surgery

  • Arrange for a responsible adult to accompany you to the surgery center, drive you home and stay with you during the first 24 hours after surgery. You will not be allowed to drive home after surgery.

The Day Before Surgery

  • When the surgery center calls you to confirm your surgery appointment, feel free to ask any last minute questions.
  • Do not drink or eat anything after midnight of the night before surgery including gum, candy, mints or a glass of water – unless you get specific instructions otherwise from your doctor or the surgery center.

On the Day of Surgery:

  • Dress in light, loose clothing. Button shirts and loose drawstring paints are best. Button shirts must be worn if you are having shoulder surgery.
  • Do not wear makeup, nail polish, jewelry, hair spray or perfume of any kind.
  • Do not drink or eat anything before surgery
  • Arrive 1 hour before the scheduled operation (unless directed otherwise)
  • Bring to the center:
    • All current medications, including herbal supplements
    • An eyeglass case if you wear eyeglasses
    • Contact case if you wear contacts
    • Crutches (if having foot, knee or ankle surgery)
    • Insurance forms (if not already mailed to the center)
    • Insurance ID cards
  • Do NOT bring to the center:
    • Valuables or jewelry.
    • Small children (Even the person accompanying you should not bring small children.)
